Can Runners Wear High Heels?

Can runners wear heels on a daily basis? Because since I’ve started running long distances, I find that heels aggravate the bones in my feet too much so I have been rocking flats almost every day for a couple months. This is not like me.

I have been a heels girls since high school. No joke, I think I am the only girl who would rock anything besides the jeans and t-shirt look.

In college, I discovered Sex and the City and the obsession got even worse. While most girls were rocking sweats to classes, I was in dress slacks and heels. I looked like the fashion majors but they were on the other side of campus so I stuck out.

After college, I developed a height complex. I’m not short by any means (5’8), but my little sisters are 5’10 and 6’0.During this stage I never, ever wore flats. In the summer I wore wedges, not flip flops. In fact, when I moved to Waterton in 2010, the locals didn’t think I would last more than a couple weeks as I tottered around the park in my heels.

But when I started dating Ryan, who is 5’10 I started wearing heels less and less. I didn’t like being taller than my man, so I only wore heels to work. That was still 5 days a week of rocking footwear.

But now it has been a couple months since I wore heels. I am guessing it’s from my consistent distance running, but heels hurt the bones in my feet. This can’t be the end for me and heels! We have too much of a history together.

But in an a New York Times article titled The Dangers of High Heels:

“… scientists found that heel wearers moved with shorter, more forceful strides than the control group, their feet perpetually in a flexed, toes-pointed position. This movement pattern continued even when the women kicked off their heels and walked barefoot. As a result, the fibers in their calf muscles had shortened and they put much greater mechanical strain on their calf muscles than the control group did.”

It also went on to say:

“Wear high heels once or twice a week, and try to remove heels whenever possible, such as when you’re sitting at your desk.”

I went on Aldo’s website for some inspiration for cute flats. There are a couple I like but it’s just not the same. RAZAFAWKES

Can I say goodbye to my old friends? I’m going to try, we’ll see how strong my will power is. My goal is to stick to cute flats and only pull out the heels for special occasions. Why oh why do these pretty shoes have to hurt my feet?

I'll only bust out the heels for special occasions like weddings

I don’t wear high heels much because I’m too tall (since everyone I usually hang out with is short) and I cannot walk in them! I do wear them occasionally though because they do make me feel good. 😉
