Yoga in Henderson Park

On Saturday, I did my first outdoor yoga experience in Henderson Park. This event was sponsored by Bikram Yoga Lethbridge and  offered various free yoga classes as well as kids yoga. I took the time to attend two sessions and tried a new type of yoga.

Vin Yoga

“Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice.”

Basically, yin yoga was about holding poses for 2-3 minutes at a time and it felt incredible! I enjoyed feeling my body stretch deeper and deeper in each position. I’m a little ADD and thought maybe I would get bored but that hour flew by so fast! I had thought we were maybe halfway through it when she said it was time for savasana.

What I loved the most about this practice was it was my first time using a mantra. I inhaled happiness and exhaled stress throughout the practice.

Vinyasa Yoga w/Lisa

I stayed for a second class, vinyasa yoga with Lisa, owner of Bikram Yoga Lethbridge. I like to go to the studio in the winter and haven’t taken a class with her yet, but I hear she’s tough. I loved her style for this vinyasa flow and we tried several new and challenging poses including side crow and wheel.

By now the sun was shining down on us like crazy and sweat ran down my face, I felt relieved and a little sad when the session ended.

I would have stayed for another session but I had to go grocery shopping and get home.

They were selling fresh pressed green juice from a new local company, Sweet Roots. It was  Pineapple, Pear, Celery, and Spinach and delicious! I’m very excited to finally have a company coming to Lethbridge offering fresh juices.

My Final Thoughts

I was super excited for this event as it was my first practice outdoors with an instructor and group. It was a gorgeous day and the sun was shining down, perfect for a good practice.

My only complaint was the noise. The kids yoga was right behind the group so the instruction and talking and laughing was a little interruptive and the regular noises from the park (kids playing, dogs barking) also took me out of the zone. I think I would prefer a quieter park in the future but it was still such a great experience!

Oh trust me I am! People were complaining at a softball tournament about the heat and I told them all to “embrace the swass” while we can!

Yah to outdoor yoga! Lululemon has an outdoor yoga near the water in vancouver and it’s absolutely amazing. It’s also free which helps add to its’ appeal. But I remember showing up and thinking, “is this real” as the mountains and ocean were the backdrop to our downward dogs.
