Bone Broth- Sounds Gross to Me!

I love new health and fitness things and I love trying them all. I tried oil pulling (I don’t have the patience), kettle bells, spinning, I force down kombucha when my tummy’s acting up, green smoothies, coconut water, hot yoga- I’ll try anything if it’s supposed to be good for you. But I draw the line at drinking bone broth- yuck!

Have you heard of the new bone broth trend? It was listed in Well + Goods 2015 Wellness Trends of 2015  and I’m seeing blog posts and articles about it too.

One of my favourite blogs The Skinny Confidential came out with this list of the benefits of bone broth.

bone

In New York, there is a specialty shop called Brodo serving bone in coffee cups and being sipped on like coffee!

This is too trendy for me and I don’t foresee myself trying it at all- but if you want to give it a try, I found a recipe on Whole 9.

  •  4 quarts water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 large onions, unpeeled and coarsely chopped
  • 2 carrots, scrubbed and coarsely chopped
  • 3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
  • 1 bunch fresh parsley
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, lightly smashed
  • 2-4 lbs. meat or poultry bones

Place all ingredients in a large slow cooker set on high. Bring to a boil, then reduce the setting to low for 12-24 hours. The longer it cooks, the better it tastes! Strain the stock through a fine mesh strainer or coffee filter into a large bowl, and discard the waste.

Ick! I’ll stick to coffee!

How about you? Do you intend to try out this newest trend?

Have you tried it? Do you like it?

I make my own bone broth all of the time. I don’t sip on it like coffee, but I use it for the base of all of my soups rather than store bought broth. My favourite thing is to roast a chicken, then make broth out of the bones, and turn that into soup. One simple chicken creates so many delicious and healthy meals!

I’m a huge believer/advocate for the health & nutritional benefits of bone broth. People get all squeamish about it because of the name, but when you explain that’s what broth ACTUALLY is (& that it doesn’t come from a can) they usually calm down. Haha!
I’ve always made it with leftover chicken carcasses & drink it like soup. Or make soup with it.
