Friday Fitness Recap- Lessons from the last few weeks

Happy Seawheeze Eve everybody! When this is published I should be just a couple hours away from Vancouver!

You may have noticed a lack of Friday Fitness Recaps but I’ve been coaching camps for the past couple weeks and that is so exhausting that I let blogging fall to the wayside. I did spend some weekend time changing up my site design- again! It’s a constant work in progress, maybe one day I’ll find a template I really like.

Anyhoo, my fitness can be summed up in one word- running. Lots and lots of running as I prepare for tomorrow’s half marathon- my first (and possibly last) half marathon. EEK!

Let’s talk about running for a second and the lessons I have learned over the past few weeks.

Clearance Shoes Suck

You know what a really BAD idea is? Buying your running shoes from the clearance rack at Shopko in the States. As a ridiculously broke student I needed new shoes but Winners was not helping me out so I bought a pair of $30 Nike Running shoes on clearance. And the problems have included blisters and bleeding, sore arches, tight calves, and tighter hips. *sigh*

Sweat + Sunscreen= Death

Nothing like running along enjoying the day and having a drop of sweat drip into your eyes and burn like lava. You try to wipe it away but you just wipe more sweat and sunscreen and it’s a vicious circle.

Never skip the Sunscreen

As painful as sunscreen in the eye can be, it beats a sunburn. I got this beauty after running 3 hours without sunscreen and then floating for 3 hours with only one application.

I’m feeling skinny Tony!

I am now weighing as much as I did when I graduated university the first time! I forgot how distance running really leans you out, especially your legs. And while I don’t think half marathoning will be a regular thing for me, I will make sure to do a weekly long run and to keep my other runs 45- 60 minutes long.

I've used this pic 3 times now on my blog. It's one of my favourite quotes from the movie!

Wish me luck! And expect a bunch of travel and race recaps from me next week!

Longest run I have ever done in my life!

Also, I like to tweet the funny things my kids say with the hastag #campcounselorlaughs if you’re ever interested. My favourite so far has been “My dad sits on his butt all day and my moms cranky about it.” Ha ha ha!

Omg Rachel! I googled and finally found your blog!! (Not being creepy– I remember you mentioned you got a lulu yoga mat for online blogging!)

How did you do on race day? I lost you girls after lining up to get our hair done at the hair braiding station on the Friday at the Plaza. I was the first to get a simple hairstyle done and quickly wandered off to see if I could get something to drink, but when I got back you were all gone! I didn’t get the chance to properly wish you luck and I was sad! 🙁 Was hoping I could bump into you among the 10,000+ at the race or the festival, but it never happened. Haha

I hope you’re recovering well! It was hard getting up + down the stairs or move around properly today. Take care!!:)

haha, glad you didn’t mind the creeping. Didn’t know you replied and haven’t read your updates since the last time I commented, but glad you had a blast during that weekend! 🙂 I was sore for around 3 days, but a lot of foam-rolling and yoga classes really helped with the recovery. I hope recovery wasn’t too bad for you too.
Would be awesome to keep in touch for next year! Will keep tabs on your posts and follow you shortly on instagram. 😉
