5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Gut Health

Timing is such a funny thing. I recently had to take a course of antibiotics and I always try to keep the ‘good’ bacteria in my body going when taking antibiotics. I eat more almond yogurt with live bacterial cultures and drink a lot of kombucha. This time around, the timing couldn’t be better as a few days before I had received a package from Renew Life of their Ultimate Flora Probiotic supplement.

People are talking a lot about gut health lately, so let’s touch on the basics.

  • To keep our gut (known as the human microbiome) healthy, we need a balance of good and bad bacteria
  • 70% of our immune system is within our digestive system so it’s vital to keep it healthy
  • There are more than 1000 types of bacteria in the digestive system; the two most common are Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium

Many modern habits are compromising our gut health and people are looking to supplements to help keep our bodies in balance.

5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Gut Health

1. Drink more Water

2. Limit sugar, alcohol, and caffeine (eek! All my favourites)

3. Reduce stress levels

4.  Take a quality probiotic supplement

5. Eat fermented foods

Now, I know I say these are ‘easy’ but cut down on my caffeine and alcohol? That is anything but easy! And if I could reduce my stress levels easily I would.

So I am focusing on the things I can do easily, drink more water, eat fermented foods, and take a probiotic supplement.

Ultimate Flora Critical Care

This supplement provides 50 billion live cultures and  is a 12 strain probiotic formula that is dairy and soy free. It also includes a specific strain that helps in preventing respiratory infections,. not a concern for me, but definitely one for elderly people. It also doesn’t need to be refrigerated which is convenient. Because if something is in the fridge, I often forget about it (hello rosehip oil)!

One pill a day is all it takes

As I said before, 70% of our immune system is within our digestive system,. so don’t think probiotics are only useful for digestive issues, they’re important for overall health. In my case right now, my antibiotics are likely depleting the ‘good’ bacteria in my body as well as the bad and this will help keep things in balance.

And remember that not all probiotics are treated equal. Like all things in life, there are different qualities and you want to find a multi-strain formula with high potency.

Great tips! I read recently that probiotics can also help with social anxiety.
