The weather is hot hot hot, and July is finally here. If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to wipe off the cobwebs from your weekender bag and plan a summer escape to take in some of the beautiful sights this country has to offer.

And because Alberta has such unpredictable weather, it’s always good to be prepared- below are five kits to have handy.

#1 – the Snack Kit

The most important in my opinion! I never go anywhere without snacks. I usually pack  nuts, protein bars  and fruit. Put your fruit in a tupperware container to prevent it from getting squished or bruised.

#2 – the Medical Kit

This is ESSENTIAL when you go out. As I learned earlier this summer, you must always have a first aid kit that includes bandages, disinfectant wipes and gauze. And I know we don’t like to talk about it ladies, but yeast infections can happen anytime, especially sitting around in wet bathing suits. Keep CanesOral Combi-Pak on hand just in case!

#3 – the Sun Kit

Your sun kit should include all the essentials you need to make sure you’re not turning in to a lobster, and spending most of your escape treating your sunburns! This means packing sunglasses, hats, lots of water, and of course sunscreen!

Ryan Jr. and I burn super easisly, so we always reach for sun protection first – be sure to have some in your kit which could include Coppertone ClearlySheer SPF 50, Coppertone Sport SPF 30 and Kids SPF 60 sunscreens. And while it’s important to apply 15 minutes before heading outdoors, make sure you are reapplying every two hours or 80 min in or after going in the water.

Don’t let burns like this happen to you!

#4 – the Rainy Day Kit

Though summer on the prairies is typically sunny and hot, the Rockies are a different story. Don’t let a little rain shouldn’t ruin your summer escape. Your rainy day kit should include board games, a deck of cards, and lots of pens and paper. While people will often reach for their phones and tablets during the rain, you can still enjoy some family time without the presence of electronics!

#5 – the Bug Kit

Nothing says summer like mosquitoes and other little insects.  Muskol Insect Repellent  is essential! I sprayed on myself twice a day at camp! It provides eight hours of effective protection against mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks (a growing threat here in Canada) among others.

Speaking of ticks, it’s a good idea to purchase tick tweezers and learn how to use them, just in case! Samara has some on hand at all times and I’m so creeped out by ticks that I am constantly watching for them when I hike.

These five essential kits will ensure you can enjoy your summer escapes, and not have to run around looking for a store in the middle of nowhere!

What an amazing give away. I always make sure that we have a ton of water for our activites. I always pack water bottles for each person and i bring a camel pack along. Which is always a hit with the kids.

    • Rachel July 8, 2017 at 7:53 am

Oh ya! I should have mentioned water! That’s a biggie!

  • Kris @ Canadian Girl Runs July 8, 2017 at 8:27 am

I definitely burn easy too!! It’s usually when I don’t think I’m going to be outside for a while so I don’t put on sunscreen but 10 minutes later and I’m already tinged pink.

    • Rachel July 8, 2017 at 8:29 am

Yup! I have found I even get pink when I’m just driving! Gotta love pale, Canadian skin. Ha ha!

  • Jessica W July 8, 2017 at 4:48 pm

Sunscreen is my must have! I even wear it on my face year round! Other than that, I love to have a leak-proof water bottle on hand.

    • Rachel July 9, 2017 at 5:43 pm

Oh man! I am forever having water bottles leak! Ha ha!

  • jessica July 10, 2017 at 9:47 pm

I burn also along with the boy, in live with many bottles of sunscreen.

    • Rachel July 11, 2017 at 6:30 am

Gotta love pale skin! Good luck in the draw!

  • Jonnie July 11, 2017 at 11:54 pm

I always make sure I have sunscreen and water. I burn so easliy which is wierd because as a kid, I never burnt. Now if I just think about a day in the sun, my skin turns red. Yours looks painful!

    • Rachel July 12, 2017 at 6:57 am

I’m the opposite, I burn less now as an adult than I did as a kid- weird eh? That burn was SO BAD!

  • Brenda Penton July 15, 2017 at 3:52 pm

For me it is bug spray. I swear flies and mosquitoes can smell my blood a mile away lol

    • Rachel July 16, 2017 at 6:39 pm

I like to hang around people like you, then the bugs bite my companion and not me! Ha ha!

  • Glogirl July 16, 2017 at 2:17 pm

My summer must have product is bug repellent. I like to spend time outside enjoying the warm weather, not the mosquitoes!

    • Rachel July 16, 2017 at 6:45 pm

Ugh! Mosquitoes can wreck a day outside for sure! I recently went camping and was scratching at my bites for more than a week!

  • Melinda July 23, 2017 at 7:09 pm

Suncreen is a must have for me and my family.

    • Rachel July 24, 2017 at 7:23 am

That’e been my most popular response- nothing is worse than a sunburn! Ugh!

  • Amy Heffernan July 24, 2017 at 7:30 am

For me and my kiddies that would be BUG SPRAY! lol Hate getting bites. Thanks. Happy summer!

    • Rachel July 24, 2017 at 7:48 am

Mosquitoes are sneaky too! If your clothes are thin enough, they can bite right through! So irritating!

  • Christine Murray July 24, 2017 at 7:53 am

bug spray. I am allergic to mosquito bites.

    • Rachel July 24, 2017 at 11:33 am

Oh yikes! That would be tough when living in Canada with all our mosquitoes!

  • Krista M July 25, 2017 at 5:53 pm

My summer must-have product is the Dr. Scholl’s Blister Cushions. A blister can ruin any outing, whether on a stay-cation or vacation. I was in Las Vegas recently & with all the walking I got a huge blister, used the gel cushions & they were beyond amazing. Saved my whole trip & saved me a whole lot of pain!

    • Rachel July 26, 2017 at 7:58 am

I have those and they are amazing on long hikes!!

  • Sarah Jackson July 25, 2017 at 8:01 pm

Allergies are terrible for my fam so Claritin kids is a must have for us .

    • Rachel July 26, 2017 at 8:00 am

Oh yikes, allergies would make it tough! There is both adult and children’s allergy medication in this prize pack. Good luck!
