My poor dogs are dying in this heat right now. They’re all black and we don’t have A/C at all (just little electric fans) and the boys are feeling it. Rocky is such a snow dog and he hates the heat. I find he eats less and he likes to lay in the bathroom up against the cool tub to stay cool. Apollo on the other hand, refuses to budge from his post at the front window where he is baking in the sun from about noon until sun down.

So when I was approached by PetSafe about a hydration water fountain my ears perked up.

You see, my boys refuse to drink stale water. They both drink out of the toilet which I know is gross, but it means I have to keep my toilet spotless at all times. Anyway, they only drink out of the toilet, and Rocky is so picky about his water being fresh that he walks us to the bathroom, stands in front of the toilet, and looks at us to flush it.

The problem with this system is that we are gone all day and I have often come home to find my toilet completely waterless and my boys looking at me to hurry up and get it refilled.

In a study conducted by PetSafe® Brand, it was revealed that 66 per cent of Canadians were unaware that lethargy or unusual lack of energy indicates dehydration in their pets.

The following percentages of respondents were aware of these common signs of dehydration:

  • Sunken eyes – 32 per cent
  • Decreased skin elasticity – 29 per cent
  • Loss of appetite – 27 per cent
  • Depression – 17 per cent

Alarmingly, eight per cent of those polled did not recognize these signs of dehydration in pets. I am one of those 80%! As I said earlier, every summer Rocky gets lethargic and doesn’t eat as much. How scary is that?!?!

Cats require 300ml of water daily and dogs between 600ml and 2,500ml of water depending on their size, as pet water requirements are approximately 70ml per kilogram body weight. That is waaaaaay more water than I know my boys are drinking.

PetSafe sent me two (one for me and one for a lucky reader) Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountains, $129.99.

The Pagoda fountain recirculates and filters 2 litres water in a pretty ceramic design (I picked the blue one since blue is my fave colour). The upper and lower dishes provide two drinking areas and having two free-falling streams adds oxygen so it’s fresher.

This particular fountain is for indoor use only. If you have a pet outside and want one, PetSafe does make outdoor fountains including the Drinkwell® Outdoor Dog Fountain, $179.99. This dirt and hair and other debris.

The company has a ton of other pet fountains so you can check them out at their website:

The Verdict

So how did my boys do? The sniffed it, Apollo took a tentative lick out of it but then looked guilty and walked away. I think they’re worried about getting in trouble if they drink it.

One night I heard Apollo drinking from it when I went to the bathroom, so I think he’s realizing that the water is there for him!

I’m going to keep it going for awhile because I think they’ll get the hang of it eventually.

As I said, PetSafe has been nice to donate a second Pagoda Pet Fountain (in cream) for one of my lucky readers. Enter in the Rafflecopter giveaway below by August 23rd, 2017. Open to residents of Canada only, excluding Quebec,

Our Layla enjoys laying out in the sun but comes back in every 20-30 minutes for a while to cool down then wants to go back out and soak up more rays. She seems to drink more water when we fill her dish from the fridge so it’s nice and cold and she much prefers fresh water over when it’s been sitting a while.

I think that’s why my boys prefer the toilet! Ha ha!

One of dogs Rango loves the toilet, the other one Ellie would but she is too small. Ellie does lick the bottom of the shower after it has been used. Crazy dogs!
