Healthy Habits You Can Start Today

People are always looking for a “quick” way to get healthy and fit. Magazines and Pinterest pins promise results in only 4-6 weeks. But that is so unrealistic! If there is one thing my mom always said it was that being healthy was a lifetime choice and you had to resolve to do these things forever! A lot of little healthy habits she taught have stuck with me such as parking in the back of a parking lot to avoid crowds and get in extra walking. Or always having something with protein in it when you’re hungry.

Spring always feels like a new beginning and we here in Alberta are anxiously awaiting it’s arrival. As I post this, it is April 6 and snowing outside. Not cool!

For those of you south and lucky enough to be feeling spring, here are a couple easy habits that will help improve your overall health:

It’s not summer, but there’s still sun.

We often think of sunscreen on hot summer days before we hit the beach or pool, but we don’t consider it enough year-round.  I wear a DAILY moisturizer with spf no matter what the weather to protect my skin. We sometimes shy away from applying sunscreen daily because it can take long to absorb, or leaves an unwanted residue. That’s why Coppertone has developed ClearlySheer Whipped and WaterBabies Whipped. Both absorb quickly, leave skin hydrated and provide SPF 50 protection from UVA/UVB rays so you and your family can stay protected all year round.

Even if it’s overcast, protect your skin!

YOGA!!

Hot yoga was the only workout that I stuck with throughout my pregnancy. Because I live in a small town 30 minutes away from Lethbridge, I was only able to make it once a week on Sundays but that’s all it took. I am not a meditating person. Sitting in stillness is a nightmare for me. But yoga is a way I get to clear my mind while stretching and working out. I plan to keep up this habit of starting my week with Sunday yoga after the baby is born to help me stay calm.

Take advantage of the outdoors.

I am all about getting outside! I believe the key to improving our happiness as a society is to spend more time outdoors. I know for me that when the snow and ice go away, I head outside to run. But don’t think that you have to run or hike to the top of a mountain peak to get the benefits of time outside. This spring I’ll be recovering from having a baby so walking around the neighbourhood or local nature trails to enjoy the spring bloom will be my daily workout for awhile.  If I do overdue it (which face it, I likely will) I am clear to take pain relievers again. I have ALEVE Back & Body Pain ready to go in my medicine cabinet. One pill gives you up to 12 hours of relief from muscle pain, body pain and headaches.

Time spent outdoors always boosts happiness and well being!

Pay attention to your body.

I’ve always been a little too tuned into my body. If something even feels slightly off I hit WebMD, which of course always tells me I have cancer. Hell, when I was pregnant, the website told me I had ulcers. Many ailments can be treated early and at home so when your body is trying to tell you something, so listen up! A common example for women is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). BV affects so many women, but it’s easy to ignore symptoms like abnormal discharge or an unpleasant odour when life gets busy. CanesBalance is an easy and effective at-home treatment that can relieve unwanted symptoms and prevent future recurrences.

Spring has sprung, and I hope you’ll join me in adopting new healthy habits as the weather warms and days get longer.

Tell me what habit you’d like to add to your routine!
