Lately, there has been a lot of talk about self-care, especially for new moms. It’s tough to take those moments for yourselves but I think everyone can agree it’s essential.  But self care doesn’t have to be hot baths, facials, or yoga (although yoga is a big one for me).  While these are all great ways to relax, there is much more to it!

Tomorrow, July 24th is Self-Care Day! What are you going to do?

What is self-care?

The concept of self-care is about empowering individuals, families and communities to practice healthy habits, prevent disease and cope with illness or disability to achieve optimum health. Taking better care of ourselves by utilizing the products available to us not only helps Canadians lead healthier lives, it also alleviates strain on our healthcare system! Making a commitment to practice self-care has many benefits.

Again, it’s not just about hot baths and face masks self-care includes:

  • Making healthy lifestyle choices
  • Using tools available to us when sick
  • Self-treating and monitoring minor ailments (aka. Don’t ignore aches and pains)
  • Improving your health education

That’s why Bayer, a global health products leader, is working to educate consumers on how Better Self-care for a Better Life can make a difference in quality of life, while improving healthcare sustainability.

Here are a few ways I practice self-care:

Yoga

As I said, yoga is my saving grace when I’m feeling stressed. I’m not in great shape right now so it helps me with my back pain from hunching over and carrying a baby all the time. Another way I deal with that back pain is ALEVE which gives you 12 hours of relief.

Phone calls with my family

My sister Laura likes to call me on her commute to work. This is so awesome when I’m sitting at home with no plans for the day. Nothing makes me happier than a call with any of my family though.

Exercise

Exercise is essential for health and mental well being. Whether you’re in the yoga studio, lifting weights, or outside running/walking- you will see a big benefit from regular exercise. if you’re like me and have high arches, Scholl’s Massaging Gel Insoles are good for all-day comfort.

Getting outside

This is the biggest one! I swear by the healing powers of nature. Even if it’s just going to our local nature trail, getting fresh air and being out in nature is a great way to stay calm. As always, sunscreen up!  Coppertone Sport Sunscreen Continuous Spray  goes on fast, has a light and breathable feel, and stays on strong when you sweat. (Also don’t make the mistake I made of spraying only. The spray should be rubbed into the skin just like lotion to avoid missed areas.)

I know a lot of allergy sufferers who prefer to stay indoors during spring and summer which is such a shame.  Claritin Rapid Dissolve offers 24-hour relief of indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. The tablet dissolves instantly on the tongue, with no water needed – which will make it perfect for on the go!

In support of International Self-Care Day on July 24th, I challenge you to share your self-care practices with me. To help get you started, Bayer has created a self-care calendar with one tip for each day of the month. Sorry that I didn’t post earlier, my trip to Seattle has put me a little behind the blogging game.
