This weekend marked my fourth year of racing in the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival and my second year with the City of Lethbridge’s team Dragn R Butz.  This year was also the first year we used sleeker, tippier boats!

We went out on Saturday for our first race and couldn’t believe how far ahead of everyone we were and it didn’t feel like we were trying at all. So imagine our huge surprise when we were given a time of 3:28! Our best time last year was 3:33.

We got a 3:31 in our second race I believe. By the end of Saturday we were ranked 12 out of 64 teams and were in B Division! It was awesome but daunting since many B teams are really good.

When Sunday rolled around we were nervous. We had to rank 1st in the heat or have a super fast time to qualify for the medal races.  With a 2:31.81 we missed the medal round by .25 seconds!! We were a little bummed headed into the consolation race but still happy we had even qualified for B.

We came in 1st in our consolation race with a time of 2:32.

But it wasn’t over! We qualified for the Community Race. A race where the four fastest local teams race each other. We were all super stoked at a fifth race. We won that race with a time of 2:31. And even better, we received a gold medal for it!  We were all super stoked.

It was an amazing weekend, once again. I feel so lucky to be able to be part of such an amazing community event every year.
